Daily Japan updates
National pay rises while English-first roles split on overseas access
July's provisional wage data improved, but two technology listings show that language and location remain separate gates for international candidates.
Developments
Japan’s latest employment signals operate at two different scales. National wage figures improved in July, while individual technology listings continued to draw sharply different boundaries around who can apply from overseas.
1. Provisional July earnings rose faster than measured consumer prices
MHLW’s preliminary survey put average total cash earnings at establishments with at least five regular employees at ¥436,401 in July, up 4.7% from a year earlier. Its real-wage measure using consumer prices excluding imputed rent rose 2.4%. The monthly figure includes special payments such as bonuses, covers responding establishments rather than every worker, and may be revised, so it is a national signal rather than a salary benchmark for an individual job search. 2. KOMODO removes the Japanese-language gate but keeps a residence gate
KOMODO’s senior software-engineering listing requires no Japanese and asks for business English, but TokyoDev currently marks it as open only to Japan residents. The partially remote role asks for at least three years of experience and covers customer-facing products connected to gaming and manga. No salary range is published, so compensation and work-authorization expectations need confirmation before the role is treated as actionable. (View the listing)
3. KOMOJU opens an intermediate quality role to overseas applicants
KOMOJU’s platform-quality opening presents the opposite access pattern. It accepts applications from abroad, describes relocation to Japan, requires no Japanese, and asks for business English plus two to five years of experience. The work combines automated and manual testing, CI/CD integration, bug investigation, and the creation of quality practices, making it broader than a narrowly scripted QA position. (View the listing)
What candidates should take away
Improving aggregate pay does not remove role-level barriers. International applicants still need to verify language, residence, work authorization, compensation, and relocation terms independently before investing heavily in an application.
