Daily Japan updates
Two digital-service changes alter how residents check support and pay immigration fees
A new medical-subsidy dashboard makes local coverage easier to inspect, while revised residence-permission fees and online payment rules take effect on October 1.
Developments
Two official changes matter for residents navigating Japanese public systems this week. One makes it easier to see where digital medical-subsidy checks are actually available. The other changes the fees and payment process attached to several residence permissions from October 1.
1. A new dashboard exposes the local gaps in online medical-subsidy checks
The Digital Agency published a dashboard on September 30 showing which municipalities and medical providers support online eligibility checks for local medical-expense subsidies. Where both sides participate, a My Number Card can be used to confirm health-insurance and eligible subsidy status together. Coverage is not universal: support varies by municipality, program and provider, and the page identifies designated intractable-disease care, rehabilitation medical care and pediatric chronic-disease care among services outside this particular online-verification scope. Residents should therefore check the dashboard before assuming a paper certificate is unnecessary. (Open the PMH dashboard, Review the broader medical-DX context)
2. Residence-permission fees now depend more clearly on timing, term and channel
Revised fees for changes of status, extensions of stay and permanent-residence permission take effect on October 1. The Immigration Services Agency says applications accepted by September 30 remain under the previous fee schedule even if permission comes later, while applications filed from October 1 use the revised structure. Amounts can differ according to the period of stay granted and whether the procedure was online or at a counter. Online cases move from revenue stamps to convenience-store or bank payment; counter cases continue to use revenue stamps. Because reductions or exemptions may apply in defined circumstances, applicants should use the official table and the amount stated in their own notice rather than relying on a general summary. What residents should do
Digitalization does not remove local variation or case-specific rules. Before visiting a medical provider, confirm that both the provider and the relevant subsidy program participate in PMH. Before paying an immigration fee, check when the application was accepted, the period of stay granted, the application channel and the current official payment instructions.
