Japan’s AI conversation shifts from demos to durable operations

A new handoff guide focuses on preserving decisions around AI-assisted work, while a Tokyo exhibition aims to connect more than 200 smaller technology companies and startups.

Developments

Two announcements from September 27 point toward a practical phase of technology adoption in Japan. One asks how AI-assisted work survives a personnel change; the other is designed to bring smaller technology companies into direct contact with potential partners.

1. A new guide treats AI handoff as a testable operating process

Kurumi Buddy announced a free 20-page guide for teams worried that AI-enabled work may remain dependent on one person. Its proposed records cover original materials, decision branches, revisions and where to escalate exceptions. More importantly, the company says the handoff should be tested by asking another worker to complete one case and then recording quality, time, questions and points of confusion. This is an attributed methodology, not evidence of measured productivity gains, but it identifies a real operational gap between producing an output quickly and making the underlying work reproducible. 2. A Hachioji exhibition puts smaller technology suppliers in the foreground

The Tokyo Metropolitan Small and Medium Enterprise Support Center opened visitor registration for the New Technology Creation Exchange 2026, scheduled for October 22 and 23 at Tokyo Tama Mirai Messe in Hachioji. The organizer expects more than 200 Tokyo SMEs and startups across fields including AI, IoT, software, electronics, optics, materials and manufacturing. Admission is announced as free with advance registration. For international companies already operating in Japan, the event may be most useful as a supplier and development-partner discovery venue rather than a conventional startup showcase. What connects the two developments

AI adoption becomes durable when organizations can transfer decisions, test processes and find partners capable of doing the work. Teams evaluating either opportunity should look beyond the promotional framing: inspect the handoff method against a real workflow, and review the exhibition roster before committing travel time.
